Triples tragics gather for eighth rally

Aussie Triples Rally

Triple tragics return to Evans Head in the Northern Rivers region later this month for the eighth annual Aussie Triples Classic Motorcycle Rally.

The event was started eight years ago by Col and Nancy McAndrew as a one-off rally for “triple tragics”.

The Aussie Triples rally on August 18-20 is for Triumph Tridents and BSA Rocket 3s built between 1968 – 1975. The 750cc triples are considered the first of the super bikes.

Col says they have about 70 entrants coming from as far as Adelaide and four coming from Mackay for their first event. Entry is $25 and the North Coast Classic Motorcycle Club is providing marshals.

The rally starts with a short ride and meet and greet on the Friday and a bigger ride on the Saturday leaving from the Bowling Club Carpark after a breakfast to support a local footy team.

“We will ride out through Nimbin and Kyogle, then on to Casino Public School where the P&C will be providing lunch while we line the bikes up for judging,” Col says.

Saturday night is the presentation dinner at the Bowlo Club with an auction of motorcycle memorabilia sent from the Triumph & Rocket 3 Owners Club in England to raise funds for Northern Rivers charities.

The best time for the public to view the bikes is at a display in the Main St of Evans Head from 8am – 10am on the Sunday.

Col owns two Trident T160s, a 1961 Thunderbird 6T, 1956 Speedtwin 5T, 1969 TR25W (250cc single) and their daily ride is a 1995 Trophy 900. Nancy also rides a 1982 Honda CB400 Superhawk.

The first Aussie Triples Rally at Ballina attracted 22 entrants, but “due to demand” it continued for five more years and now three at Evans Head.Aussie Triples Rally

The rally is always held on the third weekend in August.
