Yamaha Motor Australia has issued a fourth recall on their learner-approved MT-03, this time for a machining defect that makes the gears noisy.
The official recall notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the machining defect in the primary drive and driven meshing gears could make the bike excessively noisy during acceleration and engine revs increase when shifting through gear ratios.
Noisy gears and revving
“This is due to a mismatch of the meshing gear components,” the notice says.
“The noise generated may exceed the regulated Australian Design Rule (ADR) external noise level standards for this model.”
Owners are asked to contact their local Yamaha Dealer to arrange for a free repair.
To see if your bike is one of the noisy ones, check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list at the end of this article.
More MT-03 recalls
This is the fourth recall affecting the MT-03 since it was re-introduced in 2016.
The other three were:
- Engine vibration transmitted to the fuel tank may cause the spot weld of the bracket to break. If it does, fuel could leak.
- Corrosion of the switch electrical terminals may develop due to water contamination, causing a loss of electrical power and engine stalling.
- The clutch pressure plate bearing may fail when operated frequently. The oil pump drive gear may break due to excessive stress causing the clutch to fail. The transmission will not shift properly and the engine may seize due to a lack of engine oil supply.
YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS ON RECALLS
Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.
Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.
In Australia, recall notices are issued by the manufacturer and the Department of Infrastructure through a voluntary industry code under the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.
If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.
