Troy Lee SE4 Midnight Carbon Helmet Review

Troy Lee SE4 Midnight Carbon Helmet

This is a big upgrade in SE4 as compared to SE3 in their long line of improvements from the original. That takes motocross sport to the next level with very modern, artificial looks in a good way.

Its DOT FMVSS-218, ECE-22.05, AS/NZS-1698 and SNELL-M2015 rated, but the carbon fiber counters the denser and higher material amount requirement from SNELL.

What Would You Love?

The MIPS – Multi directional Impact Protection System technology consists of an extra yellow liner underneath the comfort liner. This system protects your head from rotational inertia being transferred from the helmet shell as you roll around the terrain like tumbleweed, in case you try to test your non-existent superhuman flying ability.

Troy Lee has, ever so thoughtfully, provided a carry bag that comes with the box to carry the helmet around.

The EPS also has cut-aways for a com unit and speakers, should you want to wear one while dodging tree branches and eating mud and dirt.

The Top Features to Look Out For

An upgraded helmet boasting a lot of advanced technologies. Which ones? Check it out.

Shell

The composite is of Carbon and Kevlar / MCT, hand laid and pre-preg which allowed them to reduce the amount of resins in the weave. This makes the Troy Lee SE4 a super lightweight lid at 2 lbs. 15 oz.!

The EPS now lines up with the shell perfectly, all the way to the chin bar. The SE4 uses a triple density EPS as opposed to a dual density one in the SE3 which makes the helmet very rigid and has better impact protection in both high as well as low velocity impacts.

This lid has a neutral fit, so intermediate or long oval shaped heads are going to experience pressure points on the forehead. But it comes in 3 shell sizes so there is plenty of room to choose your optimal fitting.

The mold of the shell, as seen from the back is a very pointy Scorpion/Shao Kahn ‘crown’ design to promote optimum airflow over it, besides looking extra cool.

Visors

There is no face shield or a sun visor because this is a motocross helmet, supposed to be open face. The box includes 2 peaks, so if one breaks you have a replacement handy.

It is attached with plastic screws instead of metal ones which makes it easier for the peak to break off in undesirable circumstances.

Ventilation

The ventilation upgrade is not just in the amount of vents, but also in their placement which changes the entire design of the helmet in terms of construction as well as aesthetics and aerodynamics.

The externalized intakes on the SE3 are now replaced with flushed vents that are in line with the silhouette of the design. Nothing sticks out even a little bit.

There are now a total of 16 intake vents and 6 exhaust vents and a stupendous amount of 9 air channels in the EPS on this lid.

A massive chin vent is supported by 4 auxiliary vents on either side on the chin guard. The 4 brow vents on the shell have been lowered, followed by two chimney vents centered around a larger middle one under the peak. The extra 4 brow vents are on the inner side, embedded in the EPS. This whole system creates a super massive airflow in the helmet, and the exhausts are well placed to flush it out at speed.

There is a larger central exhaust in a pentagonal shape under the pointy ‘peak’ of the spoiler, supported by two indents on either side. Two winglet exhausts can be found under the main ridge and a huge neck exhaust gets the air coming from underneath out.

Padding and Lining

The Anatomical 3D cheek pads come with contoured design. An added bonus is the emergency release system for EMS medics, which is expected in a premium helmet like this one.

A combination of Cool Max and Dri-Lex material-made fabric works very efficiently in wicking up your sweat. The fabric is very comfortable, but the mesh might bother some people. But if you are going to wear a Balaklava, it’s not going to be a major problem.

The comfort liner snaps out very quickly and has mount points near the temple depressions so that pressure points on the forehead are essentially non-existent for round headed peeps. It has a lot of cut-aways in it to facilitate the circulation of the massive amount of air coming in through the 16 vents. The cool thing about this liner is that it comes ready for installation of an EJECT system (not included) which is amazing to get that helmet out of the head in the event of a nasty crash.

Customer Reviews

Except the scratchy liner issue, customers found this helmet well worth their hard earned money and most of them swear by it. Their focus is entirely on the looks, safety features and extremely low weight.
