Whether it’s a clockwise or anticlockwise lap of Tassie you are planning to do, make sure you pack a copy of the guide book Throw Your Leg Over Tasmania.
It’s the second book from authors/riders Bridget Hallam and Alan Cox. The first was Throw Your Leg Over South East Queensland & Northern New South Wales.
Like the first book, this also comes with GPX files for your motorbike’s satnav.
Buyers can elect to receive the files when ordering ether of the $29.95 books online or by emailing them from the blue card inserted in the book, if buying from one of their stockists.
Alan says they can also give readers scan codes in a pdf for BikeGPX app. Riders simply scan from the app (available for both iPhone and Android).
There are also updated QR scan codes from the book to download maps and videos.
Throw Your Leg Over winner
Riders who bought a cop of Throw Your Leg Over Tasmania edition before 20 October 2018 were in the draw to win two nights for two people in a safari tent at Scamandar Sanctuary Holiday Park on the east coast.
The winner is an “excited” Noel Smith of Bundaberg West.
The Tasmania editions follows a similar structure to the first book. (Click here to read my review of the first book.)
Throw Your Leg Over Tasmania contains:
- 16 routes across Tasmania;
- maps of every ride;
- detailed directions;
- images of rides and scenery;
- interesting facts about local areas; and
- a directory of places to stay, from free camping to luxury accommodation.
TheirThrow Your Leg Over books are more guides than poetic inspiration to go riding, although the photos can be a great motivator.
Information is broken down into easy-to-digest notes that guide you along the route in stages with points of interest.
Alan and Bridget of South East Queensland wrote Throw Your Leg Over Tasmania after a 24-day, 7775km ride across five states including 10 days in Tassie last October.
“Such an amazing motorcycling mecca,” Alan says.
“We immediately knew we had to do another book, so we followed up October’s trip with another one in April on a hired bike this time to finish off the ride routes.”
What’s next?
Alan and Bridget are always looking for their next guide book and have Europe, New Zealand and Victoria on their list.
“Next is Europe, which has been in the saving and planning mode for the past six years.
“We’re heading over in April for 5½ months. Shipping my bike over. Will be heading as far south as Morocco, north to top of Norway and many places in between.
“ANZAC Day will be on the Somme at Villers Bretonneux. We’re looking at doing an e-book on that one.
“After that, we want to give up working full time and do more touring. New Zealand and Victoria are next books on the cards, so we will see how we go.”
About the authors
Alan rides and Bridget pillions, snaps the photos and designs the book.
“I grew up with bikes on sheep stations in South Australia and still have my very first bike, a Bombardier Bantam,” says Alan.
He owned a mix of dirt and AG bikes until he joined the Navy, followed by the usual hiatus with marriage kids etc.
Alan returned to road bikes in 2009 and moved to Queensland in 2012 after a divorce.
“I met Bridget six months later and we pretty much rode and explored every second weekend or so,” he says.
