Smart Helmet the smartest yet?

The now-defunct Skully head-up-display helmet has been surpassed by the even higher-tech Nand Logic Smart Helmet.

Although this helmet is not yet designed for motorcycling, Nand Logic has just announced they will make a version for motorcycles on the same platform. At the moment, it is only intended for cycling, skateboarding and snowboarding.

The prototype Smart Helmet includes HD video cameras facing front and rear, an accelerometer, gyroscope, thermometer, ambient light sensor, humidity sensor, Bluetooth and GPS. All electronics are run by an onboard multicore SoC (system on a chip).

The GPS and Bluetooth system work in the usual way, but there is so much more.

The thermometer and humidity sensors activate an internal fan when the going gets too hot.

The ambient microphones monitor wind noise and produce a reverse sound wave to cancel out background noise, like Bose noise-cancelling headphones. That would protect riders’ hearing. It also alerts the rider if it detects an emergency siren or horn.

All of these features would be very handy in any motorcycle helmets, so long as they don’t add too much weight or compromise the structural integrity in a crash.Nand Logic hi-tech helmet

But not all features would be suitable on a motorcycle helmet.

For example, it has an ambient light sensor that determines when it’s time to switch on the built-in LED headlights. Not really necessary on a bike with a hard-wired headlight!

And we’re not so sure about the alternative use for the GPS that – together with the accelerometer and gyroscope – automatically activates built-in indicators for turns and a brake light when slowing down.

Nand Logic has a Kickstarter campaign to raise finds for production mid-2015 with the target price under US$500.

  1. Thanks for writing the article. The article does bring up some good points about certain features that may not seem useful to motorcyclists at first. Like the lighting system for example. Part of this idea came out of conversations we’ve had with cyclists, skateboarders and yes motorcycle riders about the dangers of the road. During these conversations we hear one complaint consistently, “people just don’t see us.” We think this is in-part because most drivers are looking at the person on the bike and not so much the bike, which is where all of the lights and indicators are. We’ve asked people about this and most agree, they see the person first then the bike. The helmet was designed to bring attention to the rider and his or her actions, to increase their visibility to other motorists. We do think this will help, and the cost in weight is negligible.

    There are other features to come that riders might appreciate, like the auto-dimming visor with variable transparency technology. This is sure to be appreciated by some if not all riders!
