French motorcycle helmet company Shark has launched their Race-R Pro claiming it is “engineered and worn by the current MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo” among others.

Shark claims their flagship model is a professional grade helmet offering “pro level comfort, safety and performance”.

They say the helmet is worn by Lorenzo, Moto2 World Champion Johann Zarco, Scott Redding, Tom Sykes, Sylvain Guintoli, Alex Lowes and Assies Wayne Maxwell, Glenn Allerton and Cru Halliday.

The new Shark Race-R Pro helmet starts at $799.95 and no doubt costs more for various graphics and colours including Carbon Skin, black, white, Mat Black and Lorenzo, Zarco and Guintoli replicas.

We’ve worn a range of Shark helmets over the years such as the Explore-R, Evoline 3 and Heritage and are satisfied with the quality. We even accidentally crash-tested one at 160km/h on a race track and it stood up well.

Shark claims the helmet is aerodynamic and the carbon-aramid shell is lightweight.

However, it doesn’t seem to have been tested in a wind tunnel but by using Computational Fluid Dynamics technology, or computer simulation. And at 1.6kg it’s not exactly light.

The helmet has a five-star crash test shock-resistance in the British Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme thanks to its special crumple zones, multiple desensitise of EPS and separate pieces of the inner shell and long strand fibre technology.

It also features “no-distortion vision” from the “Class 1” optically correct visor thanks to variable visor thicknesses from 2.8-4.2mm.

The helmet comes in sizes XS (53/54 cm), S (55/56 cm), M (57/58 cm), L (59/60 cm) and XL (61/62 cm).

It is available through most motorcycle retailers.
