Royal Enfield is expected to axe the Continental GT 500 to make way for the coming 650cc twins and avoid confusion with the Continental GT 650 model.
At $8590, the current GT is the most expensive in the line-up.
That compares favourably with the recommended retail prices (without on-road costs) of other retro models such as the Ducati Scrambler Classic ($15,790), Kawasaki W800 Special Edition ($11,999), Moto Guzzi V7 Stone ($12,990), Triumph Bonneville T100 Black ($15,300) and Yamaha XSR750LA ($10,999).
Production of the 650cc models started in April and we can expect them to arrive in Australia in the next couple of months.
Axe to fall on GT
Meanwhile, the old Continental GT ended sales in Indian this year and is expected to end production soon as the Indian motorcycle company invests $160m this financial year on new models, R&D and increased production.
More than 16 months after the Royal Enfield range was launched in Europe with dual-channel ABS, Australian fans can finally buy the Continental GT, Bullet 500 and Classic 500 range with these upgraded brakes.
In the UK, they cost an extra $800-$1000, but here they cost an extra $200 and only $100 more for the Continental GT.
