The 40th anniversary of the Newcastle Toy Run – Australia’s longest-running toy run – is expected to attract more than 10,000 riders on Sunday (December 3, 2017) for families in need.
It’s a far cry from the 20 bikes that participated in the first 1978 event.
Over the years, the Bikers For Kids Toy Run in Newcastle has contributed more than a quarter-million dollars worth of toys and donations to the Salvation Army Hunter Christmas Appeal says Divisional Social Liaison Officer Major Christine Martin.
She says it’s a testament to the motorcycle community’s fierce and ongoing passion for supporting those less fortunate.
“We are immensely grateful for the generous support provided by this iconic event and the many thousands of riders that take part,” she says.
“Through the donation of funds and toys, we are able to directly assist local families in their time of need and we simply couldn’t do this without Bikers For Kids and community support.”
‘Stressful time of year’
Bikers for Kids chairman-elect Daryn Young says Christmas can be “a really stressful time of year for people, especially parents”.
“Knowing that we have the ability to help so many children throughout the Hunter who are in need is an absolute rush. It’s why we keep doing what we are doing,” he says.
Riders from around Australia are invited to decorate their bikes and descend on Stockton Ballast Park in Newcastle from 8am for what is expected to be a spectacular Christmas convoy.

The ride ends at Wickham Park at 10am for a fun-filled day that the whole community is invited to enjoy.
The celebrations will include a massive donation point for toys, Christmas market stalls, food and drink stalls, and entertainment including local live music, kids’ activities, Tug-O-War matches and circus workshops.
