Motorcycle riders don’t need much of an excuse to go for a ride to raise money for some needy charity organisation – and the annual Canberra Blanket Run is no exception.
Australian Motorcycle Council chairman Shaun Lennard conservatively estimates that riders raise more than $1 million a year. that’s very conservative indeed, since the Black Dog Ride last year raised almost half of that in one event.
We are indeed a very honourable bunch.
None more so than the hardy riders of Canberra who will brave a chilly May morning for their annual ride to raise money and blankets for the cold and needy.
The Motorcycle Riders Association of the ACT (MRA ACT) is again organising the Blanket Run on Sunday, May 9, 2015, and they are expecting about 500 to attend.
MRA ACT secretary Nicky Hussey says they have been raising money and donating goods for those in need of support over the winter months for more than 30 years.
“This year we are again supporting the Salvation Army and ask that participants bring along new warm blankets, cash, and non-perishable foods.
The ride starts at Old Parliament House from 10am with breakfast and coffee available from 8.30am. The ride ends with a presentation of goods and cash back at Old Parliament House.
MRA ACT
The Motorcycle Riders Association of the Australian Capital Territory (Incorporated) (MRA ACT) is an organisation set up to represent all riders of the ACT and immediate surrounds irrespective of gender, age, club affiliation, or type of Powered two Wheeled (P2W) vehicle they ride by:
- raising the profile of motorcycling in the broader community;
- actively pursuing equal rights to the use of the Roads and Regions of the ACT;
- improving road safety for riders but not at the expense of undermining a riders right to choose; and
- engendering motorcycling as a safe, efficient and greener alternative form of sustainable transport.
