The structure of the helmet has been made to be less voluminous and yet serve the purpose of overall protection just as it used to do in previous versions.
The adjustable inner layer of the face guard is an additive feature which can be adjusted according to the weather and environmental conditions to suit the front face and the neck area.
Expect more support to the neck in overall balance because of the aerodynamically sound structure shifting the focus of the rider more on the snowy surface.
Salient Features
Let’s see how this model goes around the basic pillars for a standard quality helmet and also some of the standout features to look for in this helmet.
Shell
The shell is made up of high-quality polymers and is derived from Polly alloy with the approval of both Department of Transportation (DOT) USA and Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). You have nothing to worry about here.
You have a peripheral vision through an arc of 105° from the helmet midline, making you be mindful of all that is happening around you.
With an abrasion resistant surface and projections that don’t exceed 2mm, you sure have a winner. The abrasion resistance, for instance, helps minimize the twisting force during an accident to your head and neck.
Ventilation
The helmet comes with a breath box that aids to remove all the hot and stale exhaled air through the vents to keep the inside fresh and breathable for the wearer.
It has chin skirt that can be adjusted as and when possible according to the coldness and other environmental conditions outside. It prevents the unwanted substances and also the cold breeze to sneak in.
The ventilation helps in keeping the things moving for the rider and it also hinders the goggles to fog up.
Padding and Lining
The inner part consists of foam which firmly holds the cushioning material to support the head of the rider. The chin and cheek pads have been designed in such a way that it has a few voids for the skin to breathe.
The chin strap locks together with a new patented Fidlock magnetic buckle system that uses a magnetic mechanical fastener for better protection.
With the magnetic force, you have the buckle and snap magnetically attracted to each other – this making it easy for you to lock it, even with gloves on. No matter how strong the lock is connected, you just need to give it a slight pull.
It has form fit technology that fits you all the way around your cranium to all the way around your jaw line.

The sun visor is easily movable with a handle system to slide it at multiple angles according to the direction of sun rays.
Generally, the visor’s movability in helmets is somewhat constricted and is not advised to adjust too frequently. However, with the Fidlock (2018), the visor’s handle is highly durable and can even be controlled with gloves on.
The inner face guard may be moved upside to the level of the nose and even down to the level of the neck area. It helps to check the chilling wind to get inside.
Instead of the face shield, the snowmobile helmets have to put on with goggles. The inner EPS and foam are goggle friendly – the goggles perfectly fit tight and firm on the inner padding of the helmet.
Pros
Smooth and easy to slide visor with great gloves supporting handling system.
The mechanical interface between the buckle and snap yields a high load resistance that is certified for both DOT and ECE, a technology exclusive to Altitude helmet of the 509 league of helmets.
While wearing gloves it is difficult to lock and open D-room, but it is very easy to use Fidlock.
Cons
The aerodynamic structure with a bit of extension from the rear neck area towards the chin area can be an issue, feeling a bit uncomfortable at first.
Customer Reviews
The customers are happy with the overall performance of the helmet including all the features that the helmet provides.
The flexible chin pads and the Fidlock locking system for the straps are the two things that are greatly appreciated in the reviews.
For the most part, the ventilation system and the openings work well, though a few customers feel that it isn’t as great as some other competitors. In extreme cold conditions for instance, the inside of the helmet doesn’t offer you the protection you need. However, since a very few experienced this, we can’t have a firm opinion on it, yet.
One aspect that made almost every customer appeased is the 509’s decision to make it available to the market at incredibly low cost.
