The good news is that your bike is a little safer at Christmas time as thieves seem to take some time off to enjoy the festive season.
However don’t be become complacent, as they quickly return to work.
Analysis of vehicle thefts last Christmas revealed that on December 25, 2012, there were only 78 recorded motor vehicle thefts across Australia with motorcycle theft accounting for about 12%.
This was a 52% reduction over the 162 thefts recorded on Christmas Eve. However, unlike many other Australians, vehicle thieves don’t seem to enjoy an extended break with the number of thefts climbing back to ‘normal’ levels within a few days.
In the week from Christmas Day to New Year’s Eve 2012, Australia recorded a total of 1007 motor vehicle thefts. This total was 14% lower than the 2012 weekly average of 1173 thefts.
However, by the end of the first week of 2013, offenders appeared to be back at work full time with a total of 1159 recorded thefts.
During this holiday season, vehicle thefts peaked on New Year’s Day with 191 vehicle thefts nationally.
