Caberg Ghost Matt Black Helmet Review

Caberg Ghost Matt Black Helmet

Caberg’s (Italy) line up of Jet helmets have taken the rider world by storm, and the Ghost series is by far the most popular of them. Just one look at these helmets and you start visualizing ‘SWAT’, ‘SPEC OPS’ and ‘SAS’ along the lines of ‘urban combat’. Whether you carry a Remington 870 and wear a Kevlar vest or just ride that roadster of yours is up to you. It can also satisfy your Cosplay needs where you can take a hit on the head and give two back.

But it is recommended for wearing it while riding your bike only. And Caberg has taken care in making it lightweight, strong and comfortable for that bespoke purpose.

What Would You Love

The Matt Black finish on this helmet gives it a particularly serious look. Any person wearing this helmet, however weak of mind and heart, will feel like a superhuman. But that’s not the only reason why this helmet is special. Its modular design is what will impress you the most when you look at it from a ‘flip up’ or ‘open face helmet’ perspective.

Almost all the parts of this helmet can be removed and put back together. The visor, foam liner, face mask, as well as the nose guard can be safely detached if you need a true open face experience. It does involve the use of a screwdriver, but that’s nice because a plastic snap fit design breaks easily, no matter how careful one can be. An accessory that is screwed on is less likely to break apart. Even if it does, the attachment remains intact.

This leads to using the helmet in four different configurations. The full face configuration where everything is in place, a full face config without the nose guard, a half face with nose guard but without face mask, and a half face stance without the nose guard. You can also remove everything and keep just the lid. Be ready to swallow some insects at high speed though…

Caberg also produces the Just Speak S com unit for communication and they have incorporated proper recesses and mount points in the Ghost for a quick fit.

The construction of the helmet and finishing is top notch, and puts Caberg on the road to becoming a trend-setter. There are rivets on the helmet where different things are mounted, and Caberg has used steel in some of the parts.

Top Features To Look Out For

The Ghost offering from Caberg has already proven itself by looking spectacular. What else has it got? Let’s take a peek.

Shell

How light can a helmet be? 4 pounds? 3 pounds? Caberg has managed to achieve 2 lbs. 8 oz. in making this fantastic helmet! Instead of just polycarbonate, this helmet is made of a tri composite material consisting of fiberglass, Kevlar and carbon compounds. This makes it incredibly strong while still being lightweight.

Two shell sizes result in an effective 6 different helmet fittings for your head. The shape of this helmet is what can be termed as intermediate oval, which means that most people can put this lid on. However, folks with a longer head shape can expect some pressure points at the forehead.

Visors

A scratch resistant visor protects you from dust, gravel or insects at high speed. Caberg has also provided mounts for attaching a PinLock Max Vision double Anti-Fog lens which is included in the box as a stock purchase – one more reason not to turn a blind eye.

The visor is available in 6 different stylish tints – light smoke that comes as stock, mirror, dark, transparent and yellow (gold). These can be attached with the foam face which is available in three distinct sizes – 18mm, 21mm and 25mm for a perfect fit.

A spring tilting system makes it easier to open the face mask and visor assembly for a flip up feel. This can be accomplished simply by pulling the face mask forward and rotating it upwards. It is good in the sense that the front face assembly is prevented from accidental openings in case of a crash. This is a part of dual-homologation. An ECE 22.05 standard ensures that the helmet is safe and street legal to wear in a closed as well as open face configuration.

Ventilation

There is not much to say regarding ventilation because this is an open face helmet at its core. So any venting scheme would be useless because you would be riding with the face mask open at most times.

Padding and Lining

The Ghost helmet features a breathable honeycomb weave fabric that is also ‘sanitized’. It is housed in a leather lining in addition to the leather inserts provided by Caberg.

Customer Reviews

Customers are not exactly raving at this helmet, because there are equally excellent helmets available from other brands. But peeps looking for some thrills and looks are adding it to their collections regardless. Most of the whining is because there is no DOT certification. And that is probably why Caberg is having it rough finding a dealer in US or Canada.

Bottom Line

This is a brilliant, strong and impenetrable gift from Caberg that should not be ignored just because there is no ventilation scheme or because of the fiddly face mask removal. The awesome retro looks and great protection should be enough to make it worth a buy.
