About Our Recommendations
Founded in 2000, our team at wBW has collectively tested more than 2,500 helmets, jackets, boots, gloves, accessories, and more. We do not fluff reviews. A riders safety is heavily dictated by how they ride and what they wear while doing so. Our goal is to help riders make informed decisions about the gear they invest in to protect themselves.

Best Knee & Elbow Inserts
Sliders and guards aside, below are our top picks for knee & elbow inserts. Unlike back protectors, knee/elbow inserts tend to be a universal fit and can be used in either location.
Best Overall - Klim D30 LP2 Pro Knee/Elbow Pads
Price: $
Where to Buy: RevZilla
Why?
Building on the success of their LP1 range of protection, Klim has released the D30 LP2 to meet the highest certified level of motorcycle protection. While Icon/Rukka makes an identical insert, neither is advertised as a knee and elbow insert. As such, we’ve opted for the Klim option as our top pick.
The D30 LP2 Pro Knee/Elbow pads are as comfortable to wear as they are protective. While at a slightly higher price point, these protective inserts are guaranteed to provide superior breathability with unmatched protection.

Best Fitting - AXIAL AX2 Air Elbow / Knee Armor
Price: $
Where to Buy: RevZilla
Why?
It’s easy to forget you’re wearing the AXIAL AX2 Air Elbow/Knee Armor. The slim, ultra-conforming design of the inserts promotes a set-it-and-forget-it mentality. The AX2 Air lightweight, ergonomic design is thinner and better ventilated than it’s sister model AX2. The AX2 Air boasts a whopping 63% increase in ventilation in comparison!
Limited brand compatibility works against this insert and prevents us from rating it best overall. In addition, the smaller dimensions may leave areas exposed that other inserts protect.
Key Specs
• AXIAL’s thinnest profile yet
• Extremely lightweight with exception ventilation
• Cut-out design allows the insert to conform to the riders body
• Impact energy is evenly dispersed
• Compatible with most BILT, Sedici and Steel & Street brand jackets & pants

• 7.12” x 4.8” x 0.3”

What better value is there than 1 piece of armor that can be used for everything?
Scorpion has developed a protective insert that can be used in the shoulder, elbow, hip, and/or knee. The universal design allows it to fit into most riding gear. While slightly small for some areas, the versatility of this insert cannot be beaten.
Key Specs
• Extremely flexible for a restriction-free feel
• Very thin for an undetectable fit

• Compatible with most riding jackets/pants

Best Shoulder & Hip Inserts
Should you find yourself in an accident, there is a good chance that one of the first parts of your body to make an impact will be your shoulders.
Our knees and hips are the areas on our lower body that have been identified as high-impact zones. While your entire lower half will be at risk in an accident, we want to ensure we are adding additional protection to these joints. By doing so, you may just have a better chance of walking it off.
Best Overall - Klim/Icon D30 LP2 Shoulder Armor
Price: $
Where to Buy: Klim (RevZilla) / Icon (RevZilla) / Rukka (RevZilla)
Why?
Our best overall pick is actually a three-way tie between Klim, Rukka and Icon. All 3 manufacturers have virtually identical products at comparable price points, with Rukka being the most expensive. Ultimately, your buying decision will come down to the respective manufacturer you trust more.
I know what you’re thinking; if we cannot make a decision between the two, how can you? In a situation like this, we would recommend sticking with Klim if you’ve purchased their knee/elbow inserts, and vice versa.
Key Specs
• Tri-ventilation for superior breathability
• Same highly durable material used in Klim/Icon’s knee/elbow insert
• Small, discreet dimensions for a shoulder-specific fit
• Sold as a pair
• 7.4” L x 5.47” W (as per Klim)
Protection & Safety
• CE Certified to EN 1621-1:2012
• Level 2 in ambient, wet, and cold conditions
• Temperature stable
• Non-toxic
Best Fitting - AXIAL AX2 Air Shoulder Armor

Why?
Much like our best fitting knee and elbow armor, we’ve found ourselves once again crowning the AXIAL AX2 Air’s the best fitting shoulder insert.
These inserts are virtually the same as the aforementioned armor but in a slightly smaller size to better fit your shoulder. Unfortunately, they are advertised with the same brand restrictions but with careful measuring you may find that they fit the jacket/pants that you own.
Key Specs
• Very lightweight and thin profile for a naked fit
• Cut-out design allows the armor to conform to the body of the rider
• Effectively disperses impact energy evenly
• Much better ventilated than the AX1 and AX2
• Extremely flexible allows you to move freely without restriction
• Sold as a pair
• 6.75” L x 4.75” W x 0.3” D

Where to Buy: RevZilla
Why?
Scorpion has been dethroned by REV’IT! as they take our top spot for the best value for money shoulder insert.
The previously showcased Scorpion EXO SAS-TEC Flex armor claims to be a universal fit but in our opinion is fairly small that may limit coverage in certain areas. The REV’IT! Seesmart RV31 protectors are slightly bigger inserts that protect a larger area of the body without compromising maneuverability.

• Pre-formed armor that can be used in 4 different locations (Shoulders, elbows, hips and knees)
• Universal fit that should be compatible with most riding jackets and pants. Confirm size prior to ordering

• Meets EN1621-1:2012 CE-Level 1 certification

Best Value for Money - AXIAL AX2 Hip Armor
Price: $

The AXIAL AX2 has a slim-fitting, triangular design that is compatible with most manufacturers' hip pockets. The inserts are large enough to cover your entire hip joint without sacrificing comfort while riding. They look very similar to Scorpion’s EXO SAS-TEC Hip Armor but offers CE Level 2 protection at a cheaper price point.

What To Look For In Motorcycle Armor Inserts
With so many options available, how do you choose the right armor inserts for you? Each and every rider has a different level of acceptable protection. For some, CE Level 1 inserts are more than enough to feel safe. For others, nothing but the bulkiest, thickest CE Level 2 inserts will make them feel comfortable.
Considerations When Buying Motorcycle Armor Inserts
Manufacturer - As highlighted in this list, many manufacturers make armor inserts tailored toward their gear. For example, if you own a riding jacket by Alpinestars, armor made specifically for that jacket will likely provide the best fit and maximum amount of protection for that garment.
Ride Style - Do you frequent the track, or do you primarily ride your motorcycle to and from work? For the former, you require nothing but the best. For the latter, thinner, more flexible armor may be most suitable for you.
Protection - Similar to your ride style, you need to carefully consider what level of protection you’re comfortable with. Will CE Level 1 inserts suffice, or do you want the best protection money can buy?
Size - Not all armor is made the same, nor is the riding gear we wear. Your decision on what armor insert you purchase may come down to the size of the pockets on your gear, and whether or not the insert will fit.
At WBW, “Best” Actually Means Something
Remember when you could open up a review of something, and when the publication—magazine, car show, whatever—said “best” they stood behind it? Yea, we remember, and we’re bringing it back.
Here’s how we do things:
We disclose our affiliate relationships—We make money via advertising and affiliate relationships on our website. It’s how we pay our team and invest in things like sending Jim to Italy. And Japan. And France… wait… why do we always send Jim places?
We obsessively hands-on test—We wear and ride with gear before reviewing it, and we update reviews down the line if our opinions change. We look at real-world situations because that’s the world we live in.
We’re objective—Good gear is good gear, regardless of who made it.
We’re value-focused—Why pay $500 if something for $250 is just as good? Our review scores and recommendations reflect best value. Brand only goes so far—the gear has to stand on its own.
