Air-conditioning for motorcyclists

MiClimate motorcycle air conditioning conditioner
MiClimate

We featured a bulky motorcycle air-conditioning unit in February 2014 that sat on the back of the bike, but this latest invention is much lighter, smaller and hangs off your trousers to pump cold or hot air into your jacket.

It’s called MiClimate and the makers promise it will hit the market at about US$269 with battery, having easily reached its crowd-funding goal of $20,000.

The invention comes from a company based in Phoenix, Arizona, which is in the desert and experiences extreme climate changes from around 100 degrees (37°C) maximum in summer and 50°F (10°C) in winter.

It is based on a Personal Wearable Climate unit used by the US Navy in 2009.

While there have been other attempts at motorcycle air-conditioning in the past, this is portable because it uses electronics, rather than a bulky compressor.

It’s about the size of a big hard-bound Harry Potter novel, weighs 1.5lb (0.68kg) and fits around your waist via a belt.MiClimate motorcycle air conditioning

You can power it with a rechargeable 12V lithium-ion battery that will last about four hours, or connect it to your bike’s battery which saves you $20 on purchase price.

It is controlled by a Bluetooth remote that attaches to your handlebars, or you can press buttons on the control unit to increase or decrease air temperature which blows inside your jacket.

MiClimate may still be a bit bulky, but it could mean you don’t have to go without a jacket and safety to stay cool in extreme heat.

The manufacturers claim it will reduce ambient temperature by 18°F (10°C) or increase it by 36°F (20°C).

The effect may depend on your jacket’s fit and whether you have vents for the air to escape.

Without having tried it, we think it could deliver cool/warm air where it enters the jacket, but you could still be hot/cold at the other end of your jacket, creating an uncomfortable imbalance.

But at least it shows a willingness to battle the problem of temperature which can have an effect on the concentration level – and therefore safety – of a rider.

  1. An interesting device. Like MBW I have a concern about thermal distribution.
I wonder how long it will be before motorcycle clothing makers will incorportate this technology into their products, perhaps using a number of smaller units distributed across a garment.

  2. Astronauts and race car drivers have had a system for cooling and heating the body for ages
It is a system of small tubes sewn into a set of long jonhns that distributes cool water around the body and into a heat exchanger. The only issue with motorcycle riders using the same system is the amount of movement we do would quickly result in a leak or the unit coming uncoupled from the exchanger.

  3. They are certainly on to something. This
could be the biggest thing since the legendary
‘Acme motorcycle seat buttocks massager ‘
    of the 1980’s

  4. So with no compressor what is actually the cooling mechanisms? Laws of thermodynamics have a tendency of being the same for everyone.

    1. A solid state chip called a peltier is the probably device
They are usually about 45mm square and can be put in a bank between two heat sinks
When powered one side gets hot and the other cold and swapping the sides just requires reversing the polarity.
They work very well but use a lot of power compared to a mechanical system especially when the size of the job gets larger like a room or fridge, as a personal cooler on a bike the size , job power quotient works out.

      1. Hi Peter,
They say they are “are still working with production issues”.
However, they will send me one for review when ready, so stay tuned!
        Cheers,
        Mark

  5. I wonder if they could just get it to air condition the bike helmet.
Stop fogging up etc. A simple set of tubes pointing to the visor area, similar to hoiw cars do it, and that can be connected to the units output. I am not concerned about my body temp but I am concerned about not seeing the road

  6. This is a product that is not only over rated but not even effective.

I live in yuma arizona. We get up into the area of over 115F. So big deal if this thing drops 18F ??

    That is still too hot.

Go check out the product I bought. I have no connection to them. Veskimo.

    It really is awesome.
