Triumph has released more details on its 2016 water-cooled, hi-tech Bonneville range and the base model Street Twin is surprisingly lighter.
First details released are only on the Street Twin which is now 900cc instead of 856cc and weighs 198kg, down from 224kg, despite all the water cooling and extra electrics.
There is still no more detail on the 1200cc T120, T120 Black, Thruxton and Thruxton R which are likely to be much heavier.
The Street Twin arrives in Australia in February at $13,700 and is powered by a new 900cc parallel-twin, 8-valve engine they call ’high torque’.
Street TwinIt certainly does have high torque with a peak of 80Nm at a low 3200 rpm, which is 18% more than the previous model at 68Nm at 5800 revs.
However, power is now 40.5kW @ 5900rpm, which is surprisingly down from 50kW at 7500 revs.
It has ride-by-wire fuel-injection and engine management with a 270° firing interval and a smooth five-speed gearbox.
Liquid cooling allegedly makes a 36% improvement on emissions and fuel economy.
It sits in a new tubular steel chassis with Kayaba 41mm forks and twin shocks.
The classic styling remains, except for the addition of the radiator.
However, it has a lot of modern, hi-tech rider aids including switchable ABS, slip-assist clutch, LED rear light, a USB charge socket under the seat, switchable traction control and an engine immobiliser with a transponder integrated into the key.
The single instrument pod has a screen that now displays a host of useful information such as gear position indicator, fuel level, average and current fuel economy and clock, which were not available before.
You can also use the screen to turn off the traction control and ABS.
Street TwinRiders can add accessories which can be accessed via the instrument display such as tyre pressure monitors and heated grips. It features new switchgear including a button to toggle through the various instrument information.
The Street Twin has cast black wheels, compact indicators, LED rear light, compact headlight with a Triumph bulb cap cover badge, upswept brushed stainless steel silencer, special Street Twin graphics and short black painted mudguards.
It comes in Cranberry Red, with tank and wheel stripes, Aluminium Silver with tank and wheel stripes, Matt Black, Jet Black and Phantom Black.
Triumph has launched a new Bonneville accessories range, with more than 150 new ‘dealer fit’ accessories for the Street Twin, including bench seats, fly screens, new exhausts from Vance & Hines, rear mudguard removal kits, ‘Ace’ style handlebars and compact bulleted LED indicators.
There are also three ‘inspiration’ kits to use as the starting point for riders to design their own Street Twin custom, or to have fitted as a complete set.
The Scrambler inspiration kit: Brushed high-level Vance & Hines exhaust system (off-road use only, which means not road legal); rear mudguard removal kit with compact rear light; brown ribbed bench seat; brown ‘Barrel style’ handlebar grips; compact LED indicators; and brushed aluminium sump guard.
The Brat Tracker inspiration kit: Brushed Vance & Hines slip-on silencers; rear mudguard removal kit with compact rear light; black ribbed bench seat; compact LED indicators; black ‘Barrel style’ handlebar grips; and brushed sump guard.
The Urban inspiration kit: ‘Ace’ style handlebars; brushed Vance & Hines slip-on silencers; compact LED indicators; short tinted fly-screen; and signature single pannier, in waxed cotton and leather.
Triumph Australia says the estimated arrival dates and prices (plus on-road costs and subject to change) for the new models should be:
