100-year-old board trackers revived

100-year-old board trackers revived for Sons of Speed on Discovery Turbo TV channel

Veteran chopper builder Billy Lane has revived 100-year-old board track racing to the US for the TV series Sons of Speed.

The series will be shown on Australia’s Discovery Turbo channel Sunday June 23 and 30, 2019, at 8.30pm.

There are not a lot of motorcycle shows on TV, so this is a welcome show. It’s also different from the usual bike-building shows.

Board trackers revived

Billy has been scouring the USA over the past 15 years, collecting parts so board track racing could be revived.

He says there were lots of engines around, but few complete running bikes.

The work required Billy to park operations at his Choppers Inc shop in Daytona Beach, Florida, for several months.

Billy ad his team devoted all their time to building several replica board trackers from 1910-20s engines and parts.

He says he loves the purity of the board tracker which has no brakes, transmission, clutch, fenders, lights, etc. It’s built just to race.

“The engines are so mechanically cool,” he says.

“I love how all the valve train and components are all exposed. You can see them working.”
